* The FreeBSD GNOME team proudly presents GNOME 3.14 and Cinnamon 2.2.kwm2014-11-196-102/+5
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Gnome 3.14.1 and Cinnamon 2.2.16 are supported on FreeBSD 9.3-RELEASE and up. This commit removes the old GNOME 2 desktop, bindings and some ports that can't be compiled. A few ports where updated to more recent versions to allow them to compile with this update. Apart from updating ports to newer versions GDM is more integrated with gnome-shell now, and handles several things for the GNOME desktop such as screen locking. If you want to use GNOME 3 via startx, you will have to add your own lock screen/screensaver. For example xscreensaver can be used for sessions started without GDM. Shell Extensions can be installed via https://extensions.gnome.org/ , we have ported a few that can't be installed via this way. The old gnome-utils and gnome-games ports where split up into single ports and where converted to meta-ports. gnome-terminal requires a UTF-8 locale to run, gdm handles this already, but if you use startx you need to do this yourself. Upgrade instructions: Delete the old and conflicting packages: # pkg delete clutter gnome-utils gnome-panel gnome-keyring vala-vapigen \ guile gcalctool gnome-media libgnomekbd # pkg delete gnome-screensaver gnome-applets bug-buddy evolution-exchange \ evolution-webcal gnome-system-tools seahorse-plugins gnome-control-center For package users the following lines will be enough: # pkg upgrade # pkg install gnome3 For ports users should do the following: # portmaster -a # portmaster x11/gnome3 We are currently aware of two issues. The first issue is a bug in the file monitoring code in the glib20 port. This bug causes glib programs to crash when files in a monitored directory are added or removed. Upstream is aware of the problem, but since the problem is quite complex there is no solution yet. This problem isn't restricted to BSD. The second issue is that on certain video cards totem will display a purple/pink overlay on the video. It not clear yet where the issues comes from. Major thanks goes to Gustau Perez for being a driving force behind getting GNOME 3 up to speed again. Also thanks to Antoine Brodin for running the exp-runs. This update was also made possible by: Joe Maloney Kris Moore Beeblebrox Ryan Lortie Antoine Jacoutot and everyone I missed

| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | release can be found at http://library.gnome.org/misc/release-notes/2.32/ This will be the last release of the GNOME 2.x series, mainly a bugfix and bridge release to the first release of the GNOME 3.x series. This release features commits by avl, marcus, mezz and myself. The FreeBSD GNOME Team would like to thank the following contributors and testers for there help with this release: Zane C.B. <vvelox@vvelox.net> romain@ Olaf Seibert <O.Seibert@cs.ru.nl> DomiX Bapt <baptiste.daroussin@gmail.com> jsa@ miwi@ Sergio de Almeida Lenzi <lenzi.sergio@gmail.com> Maxim Samsonov <xors@mne.ru> Kris Moore And pav@ for 2 exp-runs PR: ports/152255 ports/143260 ports/141033 ports/149629 ports/150350 ports/151523 With hat: gnome@

| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | release can be found at http://library.gnome.org/misc/release-notes/2.30/ . This release brings initial PackageKit support, Upower (replaces power management part of hal), cuse4bsd integration with HAL and cheese, and a faster Evolution. Sadly GNOME 2.30.x will be the last release with FreeBSD 6.X support. This will also be the last of the 2.x releases. The next release will be the highly-anticipated GNOME 3.0 which will bring with it a new UI experience. Currently, there are a few bugs with GNOME 2.30 that may be of note for our users. Be sure to consult the UPGRADING note or the 2.30 upgrade FAQ at http://www.freebsd.org/gnome/docs/faq230.html for specific upgrading instructions, and the up-to-date list of known issues. This release features commits by avl, ahze, bland, marcus, mezz, and myself. The FreeBSD GNOME Team would like to thank Anders F Bjorklund for doing the initual packagekit porting. * Presenting GNOME 2.28.1 for FreeBSD. The official release notes for thismarcus2009-11-293-68/+24
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | release can be found at http://library.gnome.org/misc/release-notes/2.28/ . Officially, this is mostly a polishing release in preparation for GNOME 3.0 due in about a year. On the FreeBSD front, though, a lot went into this release. Major thanks goes to kwm and avl who did a lot of the porting work for this release. In particular, kwm brought in Evolution MAPI support for better Microsoft Exchange integration. Avl made sure that the new gobject introspection repository ports were nicely compartmentalized so that large dependencies aren't brought in wholesale. But, every GNOME team member (ahze, avl, bland, kwm, mezz, and myself) contributed to this release. Other major improvements include an updated HAL with better volume probing code, ufsid integration, and support for volume names containing spaces (big thanks to J.R. Oldroyd); a new WebKit; updated AbiWord; an updated Gimp; and a preview of the new GNOME Shell project (thanks to Pawel Worach). The FreeBSD GNOME Team would like to that the following additional contributors to this release whose patches and testing really helped make it a success: Andrius Morkunas Dominique Goncalves Eric L. Chen J.R. Oldroyd Joseph S. Atkinson Li Pawel Worach Romain Tartière Thomas Vogt Yasuda Keisuke Rui Paulo Martin Wilke (and an extra shout out to miwi and pav for pointyhat runs) We would like to send this release out to Alexander Loginov (avl) in hopes that he feels better soon. On the FreeBSD front, we introduced a port of libxul 1.9 as an alternative for Firefox 2.0 as a Gecko provider. Almost all of the Gecko consumers can make use of this provider by setting: WITH_GECKO=libxul The GNOME 2.26 port was done by ahze, kwm, marcus, and mezz with contributions by Joseph S. Atkinson, Peter Wemm, Eric L. Chen, Martin Matuska, Craig Butler, and Pawel Worach.

| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | FreeBSD. The official GNOME 2.22 release notes can be found at http://library.gnome.org/misc/release-notes/2.22/ . On the FreeBSD front, this release features an updated hal port with support for video4linux devices, DRM (Direct Rendering), and better support of removable media. Work is also underway to tie webkit more closely into GNOME. As part of the GNOME 2.22 upgrade, GStreamer received a rather large upgrade as well. Be sure to consult UPDATING on the proper steps to upgrade all of your GNOME ports. This release would not have been possible without the contributions and testing efforts of the following people: Pawel Worach kan edwin Peter Ulrich Kruppa J. W. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | GNOME 2.20 release notes can be found at http://www.gnome.org/start/2.20/notes/en/ . Beyond that, this update includes the new GIMP 2.4 (courtesy of ahze). The GNOME 2.20 update also includes a huge change in the FreeBSD GNOME hierarchy. We are now using the more standard DATADIR of ${PREFIX}/share rather than ${PREFIX}/share/gnome. The result is that fewer patches and hacks are needed to port GNOME components to FreeBSD. This will mean some user changes may be required, so be sure to read /usr/ports/UPDATING for more details. This release and the things we accomplished in it would not have been possible without mezz's crazy idea to collapse DATADIR, and his persistence to make it happen successfully. Ahze and pav also deserve thanks for their work on porting modules and testing the whole ball of wax on pointyhat (respectively). The FreeBSD GNOME team would also like to thank our various testers and contributors: Yasuda Keisuke Frank Jahnke Pawel Worach Brian Gruber Franz Klammer Yuri Pankov Nick Barkas Cristian KLEIN Tony Maher Scot Hetzel Martin Matuska (mm) Benoit Dejean Martin Wilke (miwi) (And anyone else I may have missed) PRs fixed in this release: 111272, 113470, 115995, 116338

On top of the usual GNOME update, we have taken this opportunity to move GNOME from X11BASE to LOCALBASE. This means roughly 600 ports NOT part of the GNOME Desktop also need to be changed. The bulk of the move was carried out by ahze, mezz, and pav, but it would not have been possible without cooperation from the FreeBSD KDE team who worked with us to make sure GNOME and KDE can still coexist happily. We would also like to send a shout out to kris and pointyhat for putting up with multiple test runs until we got something that was solid. Back to GNOME 2.16. This release brings a huge amount of new functionality to FreeBSD. The standard release notes can be read at http://www.gnome.org/start/2.16/ . But on top of what you will read there, jylefort and marcus have completed work on a port of HAL to FreeBSD. This will allow FreeBSD to take advantage of closer hardware interaction such as auto-mounting CD-ROMs, USB drives, and music players; auto-playing audio CDs; and managing laptop power consumption. But where would this all be without our loyal testers and contributors? Therefore, the FreeBSD GNOME team would like to thank the following users: Phillip Neumann <pneumann@gmail.com> tmclaugh mux Yuri Pankov <yuri.pankov@gmail.com> chinsan Thomas <freebsdlists@bsdunix.ch> Brian Gruber <knightbg@yahoo.com> Franz Klammer <klammer@webonaut.com> Dominique Goncalves <dominique.goncalves@gmail.com> Pascal Hofstee <caelian@gmail.com> Yasuda Keisuke <kysd@po.harenet.ne.jp> backyard <backyard1454-bsd@yahoo.com> Andris Raugulis <endrju@null.lv> <endrju@null.lv> Eric L. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | http://www.gnome.org/start/2.14/ for the official release notes, and a list of all the gooides in this new release. In particular, GNOME 2.14 focused on performance, and they did not miss the mark. There's some new eye candy, but most of the big things are waiting until GNOME 2.16. On the FreeBSD side, we tried to clean up all the crashers we could. In particular, we really improved GNOME's 64-bit support. The good news is that this release does not bring any big shared library version bumps, so you can almost do a simple portupgrade to get to 2.14. There are a few minor gotchas that will be documented in UPDATING shortly. The FreeBSD GNOME Team would like th thank the following users for their patches, feedback, and sometimes incessant complaing about crashes (you know who you are). DO NOT USE portupgrade by itself to upgrade to GNOME 2.12. Instead, use the gnome_upgrade.sh script from http://www.marcuscom.com/downloads/gnome_upgrade212.sh. This script will circumvent some potential pitfalls users can see if they use portupgrade by itself. In keeping with tradition, GNOME 2.12 for FreeBSD comes with a special splash screen. The winner of this release's contest is Dominique Goncalves <dominique.goncalves@gmail.com>. His splash screen was inspired by http://art.gnome.org/contests/2.12-splash/83. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The release notes can be found at http://www.gnome.org/start/2.10/notes/rnwhatsnew.html, and will give you a good idea of what has gone into this release overall. However, a lot of FreeBSD specific additions and fixes have been made. For example, this release offers fixed ACPI support as well as new CPU freqeuncy monitoring support. See the FreeBSD GNOME 2.10 upgrade page at http://www.FreeBSD.org/gnome/docs/faq210.html for the entire list as well as a list of known issues and upgrade instructions. GNOME 2.10, as well as all of our releases, would not be possible without the great team that goes into porting and testign each and every component. Thanks definitely goes out to ahze, adamw, bland, kwm, mezz, and pav for all their work. We would also like to thank our adventurous users that chose to ride the walrus. We'd especially like to thank the following users that provided patches for GNOME 2.10: ade Yasuda Keisuke Franz Klammer Khairil Yusof Radek Kozlowsk And anyone else I may have accidentally omitted. As with GNOME 2.8, 2.10 comes with a brand-spankin' new splashscreen courtesy of Franz Klammer. However, unlike GNOME 2.8, we've included all of the FreeBSD GNOME splashscreen entries with gnomesession. You can use the deskutils/splashsetter port to choose the one you like best. As always, GNOME users should _not_ use portupgrade alone to upgrade to 2.10. Instead, get the gnome_upgrade.sh script from http://www.FreeBSD.org/gnome/gnome_upgrade.sh. Enjoy!

This release, as well as all of our others, would not have been possible without the great efforts of our FreeBSD GNOME Team. The list of current members can be found at http://www.freebsd.org/gnome/contact.html (including our newest member, Michael Johnson <ahze@FreeBSD.org>). Special thanks also goes out to all of the loyal FreeBSD GNOME users that put up with crashes and hangs to test and debug GNOME on FreeBSD. We would especially like to thank those users that provided patches for GNOME 2.7 and 2.8: Franz Klammer <klammer@webonaut.com> Piotr Smyrak <piotr.smyrak@heron.pl> Radek Kozlowski <radek@raadradd.com> Khairil Yusof <kaeru@pd.jaring.my> Yasuda Keisuke <kysd@po.harenet.ne.jp> Tom McLaughlin <tmclaugh@sdf.lonestar.org> Vladimir Grebenschikov <vova@fbsd.ru> GNOME 2.8 also features a new, FreeBSD-specific splashscreen that was designed by jimmac for GNOME 2.8, then daemonized by Franz Klammer <klammer@webonaut.com> and Radek Kozlowski <radek@raadradd.com>. As with GNOME 2.6, you cannot just "portupgrade" to GNOME 2.8. There is a script provided at http://www.marcuscom.com/downloads/gnome_upgrade28.sh that will aid in the upgrade process. Full documentation on the GNOME 2.8 upgrade is coming following this commit. From all of us at FreeBSD GNOME, ENJOY!
